Gay Bar: Why We Went Out

The Velvet Rage

What it's about: A psychologist's argument that many gay men are shaped by shame absorbed in childhood, and that it later shows up as perfectionism, validation-seeking, and an inability to sit still in a good relationship. It's dated in places, it generalizes hard, and plenty of people find it reductive, but almost everyone who reads it recognizes at least one chapter uncomfortably well. Include it knowing it's contested.

Read this if: you want the book gay men keep recommending to each other and then arguing about.

Some readers find it profound; others find it punishing without purpose. Go in informed, and skip it if you're in a rough stretch.
