What is Call Me by Your Name about?
Summer, 1983, somewhere in northern Italy. Elio is seventeen, bored, precocious, and spending another season at his family's villa when Oliver, his father's twenty-four-year-old graduate student, arrives for six weeks. What follows is a slow, deliberate circling, all deflection and provocation, until neither can keep doing it. Luca Guadagnino shoots the heat, the fruit, the swimming and the boredom so physically that the film works as a sense memory before it works as a plot. Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer play the age gap as the film's one real tension, and viewers have argued about it since. What keeps the film on this list is the last scene: a father telling his son he saw everything, that the grief is worth having, and not to kill the feeling to get over it faster.
